Postcard Kyoto Bridge by Moonlight, Utagawa Hiroshige

Born in present-day Tokyo under the birth name Andō Tokutarō, Hiroshige is considered, alongside Katsushika Hokusai, the most important representative of Japanese Ukiyo-e, the genre of Japanese printmaking and painting that reflected the feeling of life in the cities during the Edo period  “in pictures of the floating world”. Even during his lifetime, he was considered a master of landscape prints, depicting people and nature in harmonious unity. Hiroshige’s work had a lasting influence on the Impressionist painters and inspired artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Gustav Klimt.
