The Berlin Bear is Berlin’s heraldic animal and an important symbol of the city. Its history dates back to the 13th century, when it first appeared on seals and coats of arms. It was originally associated with the Margraviate of Brandenburg, Berlin’s historical predecessor. The bear represents strength, resilience, and protection and has been an integral part of Berlin’s coat of arms since the unification of Berlin and Cölln in 1307.
