Did you know?
The Berlin Wall, built in 1961, was a 155 km long barrier system that separated West Berlin from East Berlin and the surrounding areas of the GDR. It served to prevent East German citizens from escaping to the West. The Wall was part of a complex border security system with watchtowers, barbed wire, and a death strip. At least 140 people died trying to escape. The fall of the Wall on November 9, 1989, marked a turning point and ushered in German reunification. Today, the remains of Berlin Wall stand as a memorial to the division of Germany and the Cold War.
